To understand how a detached retina surgery can be performed, we need to understand what retinal detachment is. In a layman?s language, it is a disorder of the eye where the retina gets separated from its attachment to its underlying tissue within the eye. Retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissues on the back wall of the eye. When we look around, light from the objects we are trying to see enters the eye. The light image is focused onto the retina by the cornea and the lens. The retina translates that focused image into neural impulses and sends them to the brain through the optic nerve. The retina can be compared to the film of the camera.

Retinal detachments are basically results of retinal break, tear or hole. The tear allows vitreous fluid to seep through it under the retina, and peel it away like a bubble in wallpaper. It is the fluid that separates the retina from the back of the eye. The common symptoms are flashing lights and floaters. Flashing lights are caused by the vitreous gel pulling on the retina or a looseness of the vitreous, which allows the vitreous gel to hit against the retina. Floaters on the other hand, are caused by condensation in the vitreous gel and are described by patients as spots, strands, or little flies. In case the patient experience a shadow or curtain that affects any part of the vision, this can indicate that a retinal tear has progressed to a detached retina and the patient should immediately consult a doctor without fail.

Retinal surgery is a type of eye surgery involving the repair of a detached retina. The retina transmits signals or messages to the optic nerve and the brain or nervous system, thus completing the cycle of vision. The specific type of surgery will depend on the type, size, and location of the detached retina.

Laser surgery or a freezing treatment called cryopexy may be recommended for small holes and tears. It creates a scar/adhesion around the retinal hole to prevent fluid from entering the hole and accumulating behind the retina and aggravating the retinal detachment. Cryopexy is mostly done in cases where there is a lot of fluid behind the hole.

A scleral buckle is a tiny synthetic band that is attached to the outside of the eyeball to gently push the wall of the eye against the detached retina. The bands are generally not removed. The most common side effect of a scleral operation is the myopic shift.

Vitrectomy involves removal of the vitreous gel and is combined with filling the eye with a gas bubble (SF6 or C3F8 gas). The gas is often injected into the eye to replace the vitreous and reattach the retina (known as a pneumopexy); the gas pushes the retina back against the wall of the eye.

Procedure:

As shown below a thin protective flap of corneal tissue is folded back. The Excimer laser then reshapes tissue from the inner cornea to correct the individual’s refractive error with exceptional accuracy. The corneal flap is placed back in its position where it bonds.

What is Glaucoma ?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. In the early stages of the disease, there may be no symptoms. It is estimated that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not know they have it.

Visual acuity denotes acuteness or clarity of vision, which is dependent on the sharpness of the retinal focus within the eye and the interpretative faculty of the brain. Common refractive errors that affect visual acuity include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Myopia is also known as nearsightedness. It occurs when the cornea has either too much curvature or if an eyeball is too long. Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness. It arises when the cornea has insufficient curvature or if an eyeball is too short.

Another common refractive error is astigmatism. Patients with this condition have blurred vision due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus certain objects into a sharp focus on the retina. In addition, the diagnosis of refractive errors must be confirmed by eye care professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists during an eye exam.

Traditionally, corrective eyeglasses and contact lenses were worn by patients to enhance visual acuity.

But first, let’s see the group of people who are generally found to have AMD. Around 1.6 million Americans which are over the age of 50 have been seen to have the later stage of AMD. This figure includes people who are afflicted by geographic atrophy along with those who also have wet or exudative AMD. These statistics do not include the number of people who have been diagnosed with early and intermediate stages of AMD.

Due to this fact, just 15% of wet AMD patients qualify for laser surgery. Due to this fact, it is imperative that there should be early detection of wet AMD.

When you opt for thermal laser therapy, abnormal blood vessels are removed by focusing a hot beam of light on the retina. The procedure is generally done once, and shows good results. Dr. Ginsburg states that a patient’s vision is not likely to improve, but it also won’t get any worse. This therapy causes scarring, but people are unlikely to notice it. This procedure is ideally suited for patients with leaking vessels which are not in the central region of our retina.

Undergoing photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves using a cold laser to activate the chemical properties of a drug, which has been injected into you prior to the commencement of the operation.
