Initial studies showed encouraging results with transplantation of the retina in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and macular degeneration (DM) associated with age, according to the journal issued by the American Journal of Ophthalmology.

Radtke of the University of Louisville, examine transplant procedures on 10 patients with blindness due to retinal degeneration: 6 patients with RP and 4 with DM. although blindness is a different experience for them, but the RP and DM cells cause destruction of retinal photoreceptors. There is no effective therapy to restore their sight as before.

All the patients through the transplant procedure with fetal retinal cells. These cells are grown and attached to the retinal pigment epithelium, which plays a major role in providing nutrients to the photoreceptors cells. The concept is taken in this procedure is that the newly implanted cells will grow and replace cells damaged photoreceptors.

Follow-up is done after surgery showed a visual improvement in 7 of 10 patients: 3 in patients with RP, and 4 patients with AMD. “This new evidence gives hope about the method to restore vision due to blindness due to degenerative diseases,” said Radtke M.D..

In one patient with RP, the improved vision persisted for 6 years after surgery, while vision in the eye next to the untreated increasingly deteriorating. At the same patients, specific tests showed increased sensitivity to light for 27% in the operated eye.
